Buying speakers for your live sound rig is an exciting purchase and an overwhelming experience at the same time. To make this easier for you, we're here to help by showing you what the best FOH speakers are for your needs. The first decision you need to make is if you want to go with powered or unpowered speakers. This is about preference more than what is right or wrong. Here are the benefits to powered and unpowered speakers:
Powered Speaker Benefits:
- You know that the power is what the speaker calls for to use it to it's full potential
- You have more flexibility to use different circuits in a given venue
- Can add speakers with ease by chaining them
Unpowered Speaker Benefits:
- If a speaker is blown or a fuse is blown in the amp, the other is still good
- Can have power amps in one location which makes it easier when at an event rather than running between speakers
In this article, we are going to discuss the best FOH speakers that are powered. (The following products contain affiliate links. This means at no cost to you, I get paid if you click through and make a purchase)
The Best FOH Speakers And Why We Like Them
The Electro-Voice ZLX series speakers have great quality and are powerful. All of that for a reasonable price. The ZLX speakers are also lightweight. The only thing we didn't like about this series is that they do not have a designated subwoofer in the series. This may not be a problem for everybody, but I am a little OCD about everything being unanimous.
The JBL EON series is powerful and has a great sound quality. These are also durable and lightweight with a decent price tag. There has been a few complaints about the difficulty using the bluetooth feature on these.
The Mackie Thump series is powerful with very clear sound quality. It is easy to use and lightweight. The only complaint with these is that there is not a lot of functions on the speaker itself.
The Peavey PV series has a clear sound with a great price tag. These are durable and easy to use. The only thing we do not like about these speakers is that they are heavy and bulky.
The QSC K series speakers are very clear and very powerful. They are easy to use and lightweight. The only downfall of these speakers is that they are a little expensive.
The Turbosound iQ series speakers have great sound quality, they are durable, and these speakers are powerful. The only downfall is that these are a tad expensive.
The Yamaha DSR series speakers have a clear sound and are durable, as well as they are easy to use and compact. The only con we found of this speaker series is that they are a little expensive.
